In Your Hands
There’s a goddess in every mother and my son Jack has certainly brought it out in me. I’m so proud of him. He’s fifteen years old, half boy/half boat – and he’s the real reason I live in what I like to call Lighthouse Country (Scotland Island in Sydney’s Pittwater) in one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the world. He’s absolutely brilliant on the water and has an auteur streak when it comes to all things boating. He’s a natural captain with an eye on every detail and the bigger things too like the weather and tides. I look at him sometimes (usually when he’s giving orders about the ropes) and think to myself … you are the reincarnation of Captain Cook aren’t you? But he truly cares about other people. In the holidays, he’s Huck Finn, running wild with his mates, while keeping one eye out for anyone who needs a helping hand or some friendly advice about … you guessed it, boats.
I would have loved more children, but Jack and I both know he’s not really an only child. My creative projects are his siblings and there’s a deep connection between the two. Funnily enough, it’s when I started creating bronze fertility figures as part of an impassioned response to my struggle to have children, that my self expression really began to blossom – I think they also got me pregnant. And my sister-in-law. Oh, and one of my friends.
